Why So Serious, Dear Writers?

Sometimes, I think about lovers who write—especially Indian lovers—and wonder why they rarely see things from a humorous angle. If they are in love, they see the world through rose-tinted glasses, and if their beloved leaves them, they retreat into melancholic musings. But where are the light-hearted moments, the self-deprecating humor, the satirical takes on love? Why don’t we see Keats poking fun at the absurdities of courtship, or Romeo cracking a joke about his dramatic misfortunes? Why do poets and authors often typecast themselves—or get typecast by others—into one emotion or genre?

Writers, like everyone else, experience the full spectrum of emotions. Why, then, should they limit their expression to just one? As a writer, I refuse to box myself in. Sometimes, I find humor in the most complex problems; at other times, even the wittiest joke feels hollow or insensitive. These contradictions make us human—and make writing truly alive.

It’s time we stopped limiting writers and allowed them to explore every emotion equally. Writing about all aspects of life isn’t a lack of focus—it’s the very essence of creativity.
