AICWA Demands Reform After Stuntman’s Death on ‘Vettuvam’ Set

Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu — The All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has called for immediate reforms and accountability in the Indian film industry following the tragic death of stuntman Mohanraj (also known as Raju) on the set of the upcoming Tamil film Vettuvam. The incident occurred on July 13 during the filming of a dangerous car stunt in Nagapattinam.

In a strongly worded public statement, AICWA alleged gross negligence on set, citing a leaked video that shows Mohanraj performing a high-risk stunt without adequate safety gear, medical backup, or emergency support. The organization described the circumstances leading to his death as not just negligence, but a “crime,” and accused the production house of attempting to cover up the incident.

The association has announced plans to meet with Union Labour Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya to push for a national safety law aimed at protecting cinema workers, with a particular focus on those involved in hazardous roles like stunt performers.

Key Demands from AICWA:
  • A judicial inquiry into Mohanraj’s death and criminal charges against the film’s producer and production company.
  • Mandatory insurance for every stunt performer and technician before filming begins.
  • Implementation of international-level safety protocols on all sets involving stunts.
  • Central and state government oversight is ensured through strict safety guidelines enforced by the Ministry of Labour.
  • A minimum compensation of ₹1 crore through production insurance for families of workers who die during film shoots.

AICWA also criticized the widespread lack of insurance coverage for stunt professionals, claiming that over 90% of them operate without any safety net. They accused production houses of listing only a few insured individuals to misrepresent compliance.

The organization praised actor Akshay Kumar for his efforts in ensuring some stunt professionals, but emphasized that such initiatives should be standardized and enforced across the industry.

"Stuntmen Are Treated as Disposable"

AICWA’s statement further highlighted the stark disparity between the treatment of lead actors and stunt performers. “When a superstar performs a stunt, world-class safety measures are in place. But when a stuntman does it, cost-cutting compromises their lives,” the association said.

“Stunt artists are the real action heroes. They jump off buildings, crash vehicles, and hang from helicopters to bring stories to life. Yet, their injuries are hidden, and when tragedy strikes, their families are left abandoned.”

According to AICWA, stunt performers regularly suffer life-altering injuries or death on sets, while the industry continues to operate without standardized safety laws, mandatory insurance, or accountability mechanisms.

As calls for reform grow louder, AICWA is urging the government to recognize the urgent need for systemic change to ensure that no more lives are lost in the pursuit of cinematic spectacle.
